The Francis Scott Key Lions Club recently continued their Operation Blue Thank You service project honoring local Frederick police officers.

Over the years the FSK Lions Club has hosted Frederick Police Department members and staff to present informative programs, such as then-Acting Chief of Police Patrick Grossman, Lt. Bruce DeGrange, then-Sergeant Shawn Martyak, Gang Analyst Robert Marker, Crime Scene Supervisor Wendy Martyak, and Automated Enforcement Coordinator Wade Brown.

After a suggestion by Lion Wil Rice, the club decided to invite an on-duty FPD patrol officer to spend his/her meal time with them as a guest for dinner at the Lions meeting. The officer is not asked to present a program or to listen to a membership recruitment pitch, simply to join the Lions for dinner as an expression of appreciation for what police officers do for citizens every day. Selection of the officer was left to the FPD. The club feels a connection with the Frederick Police Department, since two Lions members are FPD retirees: Vice-president Paul Gray retired twice, first as an officer, then as a civilian Information Clerk; and Lion Lynn Stimmel retired after 32+ years as the Criminal Investigation Division secretary.

The most recent Operation Blue Thank You participants/honorees were Ofc. Charles Ross of Patrol Division II Squad D in May and Ofc. Durell Deal of Patrol Division’s B Squad in June. The program, which began in 2016, will continue in the club’s 2019-2020 club year.
